Obituary of Martin Mulroy
Deacon Martin Mulroy, age 84 of Bridgewater, NJ, died Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, NJ surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late James and Helen Mulroy.
He resided in Brooklyn for many years before moving to Bridgewater 17 years ago.
Martin served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from St. John's University in Queens, NY and then his Juris Doctor Degree at St. John's University School of Law. He earned a master's degree in theology (catechetics) at St. John's and a master's degree in systemic theology at Seton Hall.
Martin was a member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Parish in Bridgewater. He was a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre and was ordained as a deacon in the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1994. He served many parishes during his time as a deacon, including: Our Lady of Angels Parish, Brooklyn; St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Three Bridges; Blessed Sacrament Parish, Martinsville; Mary Mother of God Parish, Hillsborough and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Whitehouse Station. From 1961 to 1964 he served in the FBI where he was assigned to Washington, DC, Savannah, GA and Myrtle Beach, SC focusing on investigating and working on the prosecution of violations of federal statutes, particularly in the area of civil rights cases. He then returned to NYC as a senior partner for Hill, Rivkins, Loesberg, O'Brien and Mulroy law firm for more than 30 years. He was also an adjunct professor of theology at Felician College, Lodi and a scripture and moral theology instructor at St. Peter the Apostle High School in New Brunswick.
Martin had a personality that was larger than life. He was loved and respected by all who knew him; he will be sadly missed.
He was predeceased by his brothers, James, John and William.
Martin is survived by his wife, Ann and his five children, Sheila Brown and her husband Steve , Donna Szmak, Nancy Monteiro and her husband Tony, Martin V Mulroy and Jim and his wife Annie. He is also survived by his 7 grandchildren, Ashley, Karen, Brian, Matt, Katie, Greg and Ally as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, July 11, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Church in Bridgewater.
Friends and relatives may visit with the family on Thursday from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 9:00 PM at the Kearns Funeral Home, 103 Old Highway 28, Whitehouse, NJ 08888
