Obituary of Hedwig Bernzott
Hedwig (Hedy) Bernzott, age 95, died peacefully on Monday, May 11, 2015 at her home in Readington Township, where she lived for close to 70 years.
Born in 1920 in Bockhorn, Germany she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Anna Schmelzer and was predeceased by her sister, Erna and brother, Karl both of Germany.
Hedwig came to the US when she was 12 and later met her late husband, Fred while working at the German movie theater in Irvington. Her husband, Fred died in 1982. Hedwig had many jobs throughout her life including running her own small diner, being a lunch lady in Readington Township, teaching German School in Plainfield and working at the Union Avenue Pharmacy.
Hedwig belonged to the Plainfield Gesang and Turn Verein for about 50 years, where she enjoyed singing in the chorus. She also enjoyed traveling, especially to Germany.
Hedwig is survived by her daughter, Anneliese Belcher of Whitehouse, two grandchildren, William Richard Belcher and his wife, Stephanie of North Carolina and Suzanne Nadeau and her husband, Rich of Whitehouse Station and her four great grandchildren, Victoria and Allison Belcher and Nicole and Samantha Nadeau who lovingly knew her as Oma.
A memorial service will be on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 2:00PM at the Rockaway Reformed Church in Whitehouse Station, N.J.
