Obituary of Walter J Lewandowski
Walter J. Lewandowski, age 98 of Whitehouse Station, NJ, died Thursday, March 31, 2016 at his son’s home, with his family by his side.
Born in Detroit, MI in 1917, he was the son of the late Joseph and Lucia Lewandowski. Walter grew up in Detroit and lived in Sun City Arizona for 30 years before moving to Whitehouse Station in 2014.
He was drafted in October 1941 and served in the 803rd Tank Destroyer Battalion throughout Europe during World War II. He was wounded twice and received the Purple Heart before being discharged from the Army in October 1945.
Walter married his first wife, Helen Byszkowski, in 1946 and they lived in Detroit until his retirement when they moved to Sun City, Arizona. He was a maintenance worker, employed by the City of Detroit and was also a part-time barber. Walter was predeceased by his first wife, Helen who died in 1980 and his second wife, Betty Garrison who died in 2005.
He is survived by his son, James and his wife Elizabeth of Whitehouse Station, his daughter, Barbara Simonowitz and her husband David of Redmond, Washington, his 5 grandchildren, Ethan Simonowitz, Jacob, Thomas, Helen and Sophie Lewandowski. He is also survived by his great grandson, Noah Simonowitz.
Walter was a wonderful and kind man who loved to dance and play pinochle. He also loved watching reruns of the Lawrence Welk show and was determined to foster the same enthusiasm in his family.
Walter’s family would like to thank Hunterdon Hospice for all their care and support during Walter’s final months. Special thanks to Sara Nelson, who was his primary Hospice nurse. With Hospice’s help Walter was able to die, as he wished, at home and at peace.
Funeral arrangements will be private and have been entrusted to the Kearns Funeral Home, 103 Old Highway, Whitehouse.
