Obituary of Dolores A. Fischer

Dolores A. Fischer, of Whitehouse, passed away peacefully at the Rolling Hills Care Center on June 14, 2016. Born in Staten Island on November 25, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Helmer and Anna Andersen. Dolores moved to Elizabeth at an early age and graduated from Battin High School in 1946. She was active in band and orchestra, an excellent flute player and was selected in her senior year to all state band. Dolores attended Trenton State Teachers College, now the college of New Jersey, majoring in Elementary Education. In college she was involved in choir, band and orchestra. It was there she met her husband, Herb Fischer and the beginning of a 66 year relationship began. Doris graduated in 1950 with a Bachelors Degree in Education. Her first teaching job was in Whitehouse School which led to a 31 year career in education. She and Herb bought 3 ½ acres of land from the owners of the Ryland Inn and built their home, where they lived for 66 years. Dolores attended Fairleigh Dickinson University and earned a Masters Degree in Special Education in 1974. During the last 15 years in education, Dolores was a Learning Disabilities Specialist with Readington Township School’s, Child Study Team. In 1958, Dolores and Herb bought a lot in Harvey Cedars and built a vacation house. They enjoyed this for many summers before selling it in 1971 to use their vacation time for more extensive travel. They enjoyed a number of trips to Europe, cruises to Alaska, the Panama Canal and Caribbean. Their last trips were on Viking River Cruises, on the Elba, Danube and Rhine Rivers. Dolores was an active volunteer in Readington Township. She served on the Local Assistance Board, serving as secretary for many years. She worked for the Hunterdon County Election Board, was Readington Township Republican committee woman for the first election district and was also president of the Readington Township Republican Club. She enjoyed volunteering in the Whitehouse Station Library, located in the train station and was active in the station’s restoration. She loved to read, especially mystery novels, enjoyed crossword puzzles and gardening. Dolores was a member of the Rockaway Reformed Church, where she enjoyed many years singing in the choir. She also played the flute in a number of community bands in the area. Dolores and Herb were also members of the College of New Jersey Reunion Committee. They had attended their 65 year reunion last year. Dolores is survived by her husband, Herb of 65 years and her son, David and his wife, Patti of Pattenburg. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 24, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Rockaway Reformed Church, 115 Main Street, Whitehouse Station, NJ.
