Obituary of Paul Staudt

Paul Staudt Jr, a life-long New Jersey resident, died suddenly on May 15, 2020 at his home in Readington Township, NJ.

Paul was born on September 7, 1939 in Passaic, NJ. He attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he earned a degree in Architecture. It was there that he met his future wife, Ann Staudt. They married on June 30, 1962 and settled in Washington Township, Bergen County. He, Ann, and their children later moved to Readington Township where he lived for the last 42 years.

Paul was a respected, generous, and selfless person who quietly gave so much to his community, his church, and dozens of charitable organizations during his lifetime. Paul devoted much of his time and energy to organizations dedicated to helping couples, families, and children, including: Hunterdon County Chapter of Compassionate Friends, a support group for parents who suffered the loss of a child where he was the Founding Member; Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister, Hospital Ministry volunteer, and CCD Instructor; he was a Team leader for Pre-Cana, Marriage Encounter and The Family Weekend Experience which he also helped to develop. Most recently he was an active board member of the CEA, an organization based in Flemington that facilitates career pathways and community employment for people with disabilities.

Paul spent his career as a Registered Architect, working first in the private sector before being employed by the State of New Jersey where he worked a variety of roles, including the position of State Architect before retiring.  He was most proud of his work developing the state’s Uniform Construction Code, leading the renovation of the War Memorial building in Trenton, and playing a key role in the design and construction of New Jersey’s Vietnam War Memorial.  

Paul served in the U.S. Army after graduating from Pratt.  He achieved the rank of 1^stLieutenant and was an Air Defense Missile Unit Commander stationed in South Korea before being honorably discharged from active duty in 1964.

Paul enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies and interests that included woodcarving, painting, travelling, gardening and pottery. 

Paul is survived his son, Paul Matthew Staudt (Michelle) of Morristown and his daughters, Kathy Johnson (Jeff) of Hope Valley, R.I., and Jill Snook (Dean) of Alexandria Township; and his eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Kristine Staudt in 1979 and his wife Ann, in 2012.

Paul was buried on May 19, 2020 at St.Magdalen’s Cemetery, Flemington.

A funeral liturgy and memorial service will be celebrated on a future date at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Whitehouse Station.
