Jim Murphy, DVM posted a condolence

I did not have the privilege of knowing Dr. Dominic Gentile. I read about his passing in the June 2022 issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA). When I read he was only 28 and had just graduated veterinary school in 2021, I felt compelled to know more about him. I found this tribute page and read the many heart-felt comments written by his friends, loved ones, and colleagues. What a fine young man. To graduate summa cum laude from veterinary school is no small accomplishment. While I am happy he was able to practice veterinary medicine for a short time, I am saddened that our profession has lost someone so young, so brilliant, so kind, and so compassionate. We cannot understand these things. But we do know the world is a lesser place without him. I pray his friends and family have found a small measure of solace since his passing. Perhaps God needed a special veterinarian. ~ Jim Murphy, DVM, Bowie, Maryland.

I met Dominic when I was sent to care for his ailing Grandfather. Dominic and his siblings soon became very dear to me and I enjoyed cooking with their Mom to make their favorite dishes. Maureen became like a daughter, and it was a pleasure watching her shower her 3 children with love. I sent Dominic cookies when he went off to college, and I have 2 beautiful notes that he sent back to me. To say he was special would be an understatement. It breaks my heart that this world will have to go on without one of the brightest lights ever to shine upon it. Dominic, I loved you. You knew it, and I will be eternally grateful that you did. Love, Bert

I remember Dominic from when he was in my kindergarten class. He was the first member of the Gentile family that I met. He was always smiling and eager to learn. Just recently I read that he had become a veterinarian and had joined a local practice. It brought a wide smile to my face. I was saddened to hear of his illness and passing, but also so impressed with his accomplishments courage. My deepest sympathy to all of Dominic's family. Sometimes it's so hard to understand what seems so unfair. God Bless you all and may he rest in peace. Kathy Gavula

I cannot make the wake as a result of living in the Atlanta, Georgia area for graduate school. However, I have followed Dom's journey over the past decade primarily on social media after meeting him in Honors Physics class at Hunterdon Central our junior year. I have never heard an unkind word about Dom, and his journey will serve as an inspiration to me and I'm sure many others for all that he overcame, including achieving his dream of becoming as well as practicing as a veterinarian. He was what I think of as an "All-American kind of guy." May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him, even if only briefly #DomStrong

Dominic has been in my life since Pre school. I’ve had the pleasure to have many memories with Dom. Dominic was one of the smartest, kindest, and adventurous person I have ever known and backpacking the Adirondacks mountains was something he helped me with the courage to do. One of my most recent memories I’ve had with him was when I was driving to move homes in 2020 and he was driving up to Maine and we spent multiple hours on the phone while both driving to our destinations. Our conversation again gave me courage in other aspects of my life and we got to share some laughs too. You have always been there for me Dominic. I love You and I really Miss you.

I had the privilege of being in Dom's veterinary school class. He will always be remembered as a friend to all, with a brilliant mind and kind heart. His contributions to the veterinary profession will be continued by all of his classmates, who were inspired by his optimism and determination. I can honestly say that I have a better outlook on life and my career because of the way he lived his life. May God bless his soul and comfort all of his family and friends.

While others had the pleasure of getting to know Dom better than I had, I started in the UNL/ISU PPVM Class of 2020. I spent a year and some change in the same class as Dom until I took a year off. As the Class of 2020, we were like a family, and it was always clear to me that Dom was a uniquely bright soul. I always admired his brilliant mind. While I missed the opportunity to grow closer with Dom, we did talk from time to time as we passed each other in our last year at ISU. Once like family, always like family in my book. What a loss to Vet Med and the world. ❤️

We here at the Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine are sharing in your grief. Dom was such a bright light. I enjoyed every time he would visit my office to tweak his schedule or to catch up on how he was doing. I'm sorry that Dom only had a short time to practice his beloved career of veterinary medicine. Dom was an exceptional student, veterinarian and individual. My deepest sympathies and prayers for Dom's family.
