Obituary of Sally Louise Harwell

Sally Louise Harwell, 77 years of age, passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2022, at her home in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey.

Sally was born on August 9, 1944, to the late Leo and Margery Leonard of Westport, Connecticut. She was the second of six children in the Leonard family.

She had fond memories of her time as a young woman on Long Island Sound and the Shore and Country Club where she enjoyed boating and time with friends and family. She attended Staples High School in Westport. After high school she attended King’s College in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she met her husband of 55 years, Mike Harwell, a Charlotte native. Sally and Mike were married on August 20th, 1966, at her parents’ home in Westport, and, after Mike’s time in the Army, moved to New Jersey where they have spent 48 years in their home in Whitehouse Station.

A loving and devoted wife and mother, Sally cherished times with her family at their lake cabin in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. She was an avid reader, loved playing with and reading to her grandchildren, and was fond of cooking, playing games and doing puzzles. Sally cherished her family history and enjoyed sharing stories and keeping records. She and her husband Mike were long-time members at Calvary Bible Church in Readington where she served as church secretary, and the Whitehouse United Methodist Church where she served in ministries feeding the homeless and working with the Salvation Army.

Sally is survived by her husband Mike Harwell; her son Michael and daughter-in-law Sue Harwell and their children Michael and Abigail; her daughter Margery and son-in-law Brian Van Zante and their children Robbie (wife Megan) Van Zante, Brianne (husband Matthew) Fischer and Sarah Van Zante; and her daughter Caitlin and son-in-law Carlos Csiszer and their children Benjamin and John; sister Anna (husband Bill) McLaughlin; sister Lucy Leonard (partner Jimmy Kileen), as well as many other dear friends and family members.

To honor Sally’s legacy, her family has chosen to celebrate her life with a private event for immediate family only. Friends wishing to honor Sally’s memory are invited to make a donation in her name to V Foundation: Victory Over Cancer
