Obituary of Clifford Fugh Evans

Clifford F. Evans, 90, passed away after a brief illness, Sunday, Nov. 6. Born in 1932, he graduated from Pittsburgh's Mt. Lebanon High School and Cornell University (Class of '54) with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. Clifford lived life to the fullest, smoking his ubiquitous cigar and wearing his bowtie every step of the way.  His only disappointment was the dismal record of his beloved Pittsburgh Pirates. That he never gave up on them tells you something about his sense of loyalty to family, friends and community.  A lifelong Christian, Clifford's strong faith carried him through life’s trials and tribulations.  He married his high school sweetheart Hona Bradley and they had two children, Wyatt and Amy. 

Clifford began his construction management career with Proctor & Gamble. Project postings included Sacramento, Cincinnati, and Paris, France-- where he developed a love for oysters on the half shell. Following Procter & Gamble, he worked for the James G. Davis Company in Washington, D.C., and Wigton-Abbott in Plainfield before joining Somerville-based Henderson Construction as vice-president in 1973. After purchasing the company from founder Paul Henderson, Clifford and partner Edward G. House continued to grow its reputation as a quality design and construction firm whose clientele included many Fortune 100 pharmaceutical companies. President and then CEO from 1984 until his retirement in 1995, Clifford took great pride in maintaining a personal touch with clients and employees. His office walkarounds were legendary.

In 1980, Clifford married Kay Stanton and they were longtime residents of Tewksbury Township, NJ. Fulfilling a lifetime ambition, he earned his pilot's license at age 55, flying out of Somerset and Solberg airfields. He made two transatlantic voyages in a single-engine plane and flew organ donor missions on the East Coast. An avid traveler, he visited China, Africa, the Middle East, Wales, and most of Europe. Clifford believed in giving back to the community and was an active member of local United Methodist churches. He served on the boards of the Bonnie-Brae School in Liberty Corner and Centenary College in Hackettstown. 

Clifford will forever be remembered lovingly by his children; their spouses Allyson and Paul; his four granddaughters-- Natalie, Audrey, Emily and Sarah; and his two great-grandchildren, Paloma and Fritz. 

The memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 19 at 11:00 am at the Whitehouse United Methodist Church in Whitehouse NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the church-- either by check or PayPal at https://whitehouseumc.org/.
