Montrell Haldeman, Assistant Chief (retired) from the Cherry Hill Fire Department and a friend of Eugene’s for 25 years.
I met Eugene during his tenure at Solkatronic Chemical. I was a young firefighter in search of knowledge & training in the field of Hazmat. I attended a course that Eugene was conducting in Philadelphia. Wow, I was blown away! Little did I know this would be the start of a 25-year friendship, one driven by our desire to gain knowledge & share experiences with others in our field. Eugene’s unique ability to convey highly technical information to firefighters was truly a gift.
Over the year’s Eugene spent many weeks with CHFD, educating our firefighters in Compressed Gas emergencies. We developed operational guidelines because of Eugene’s instruction. We utilize numerous pieces of response equipment that Eugene designed. Eugene’s influence on the CHFD response capabilities is immense.
While handling various compressed gas emergencies, I would always say to myself “what would Eugene do?” He took many phone calls from me at all hours of the day & night while we were handling emergencies. Peggy, I’m sorry, I surely interrupted personal time with you & Eugene on more than one occasion. He always answered my call no matter where he was at in the world. One instance, that I will always remember was shortly after I had retired from the fire department. I received a call from one of CHFD hazmat officers regarding an incident they were handling. The incident involved the abandoning of compressed gas cylinders. While the demolition crews were clearing the cylinders from the building one of the cylinders caught fire. The demo crew took the burning cylinder outside & buried in a large pile of dirt. CHFD members arrived & told me that there was a distinct brown/orange smoke coming from the cylinder & it caught fire as soon as they turned the cylinder valve handle. Being that it is buried, I said, “Well you’re going to have to uncover it & get information off the cylinder.” Members did that and found the word Silane on the cylinder. Immediately, I said, “We need to get Eugene on the phone!” The cylinder dated back to the 1950’s. Eugene proceeded to give us the history of the cylinder, who to call to assist with disposal & additional actions to take. This is just one example of Eugene’s impact and it occurred many times.
His expertise has been shared with many responders across the globe. He was always proud of his work & wanted to share his knowledge with anyone who would listen. Because of this, there is no doubt countless lives of workers & emergency responders have been saved. This dedication to assist Fire Fighters was no more evident than after 9/11 when Eugene assisted the FDNY in the rebuilding of their hazmat capabilities after that tragic event. Eugene spent countless hours assisting FDNY in training new hazmat personnel on Compressed Gas emergencies. He was extremely proud of that & we would talk about that experience often.
Eugene shared a lot of his experiences through his business Chemically Speaking. He would publish information about incidents that occurred around the country & world to help spread the word about issues responders were being faced with. Eugene always had a distinct way of presenting information & you knew you were in for a good learning opportunity when he started with his unique chuckle & laugh. Two of these learning opportunities Eugene shared with me via a phone call that started out with “Trell, I got lucky today” & “Trell, I almost blew myself up today”! I thought to myself, “If this almost happen to Eugene than surely it could happen to a ‘chucklehead fireman’ like me.” I better learn from this incident! This is what made Eugene special, he was humble, knowledgeable & passionate about his craft.
Even as Eugene was struggling with his current medical challenges he still was willing to share information. On Mother’s Day this year, I received a phone call from Eugene updating me on his health. He had just got home from the hospital and he seemed pretty upbeat about starting his chemo & radiation treatments. While we were on the phone he asked me if I had any interesting responses lately? I shared an incident that had occurred at a facility near me involving a compressed gas tube trailer. Without hesitation, he proceeded to email me information about the chemical in question & various response options. This was the caliber of man that we all became accustomed to loving. Unfortunately, this was the last time we spoke on the phone together. His devotion to the emergency response community was unparalleled as proven even on his most challenging of days.
After training for a particular day was done, we would get together for a “Happy Hour Debriefing” at one of our favorite restaurants. We enjoyed many good meals together. For a little man he could really eat & put away some bourbon! He always would share stories of his travels & of his family. Courtney & Janine, your dad would always brag about you both. He loved you both dearly, was very proud of all you have accomplished. Eugene and I would share stories of our children growing up & he would give me “fatherly advice” on raising daughters. I would take all the advice I could get on that one!
Eugene was a tremendous husband, father, friend & colleague. His attributes, professionalism & knowledge have been entrained in many of us across this great nation. I am proud to have called Eugene my friend & I am truly blessed to have known him. I will miss him tremendously. Peggy, Courtney & Janine thank you for sharing Eugene with us. He would not have been able to do all that he did without your love & support. Please know that Eugene’s legacy will live on through myself, the members of CHFD & others that have been touched by his knowledge.
There will be many times that we will ask ourselves “what would Eugene do?” Eugene, may God Bless you & please watch over us as we continue to carry out our mission!

Dear Peggy, Courtney, and Janine,
My wife Fran and I were privileged to attend the Memorial for your dear Husband and Dad! It was so moving. He interviewed me for my job in Matheson in 1980 in East Rutherford, and we kept in contact for the next 43 years through CGA and ISO and texts and phone calls. I learned so much from him! I was able to speak at a few of the Silane Safety Seminars he arranged in Taiwan and Singapore. But what stands out to us was when our daughter Sarai was hospitalized for over a year (she did make a full recovery) he sent Sarai a postcard from wherever he was in the world every few weeks encouraging her to keep up the fight to recover from a serious illness which she did! You brought tears to our eyes Courtney with your touching tribute to your Dad. I let former colleagues at Matheson and CGA know that Dad is now sleeping peacefully without pain. Please accept our heartfelt condolences and sympathy. May the inspired words in the 25th chapter of Isaiah and verses 6-9 bring a measure of comfort at this time of loss and sadness and tears. Sincerely, Jerrold and Fran and Sarai Sameth

Eugene and I worked at Air Products for many years. After AP, we kelp in touch on LinkedIn. Last interaction I had with him was on 11 January 2023. He was interested in a brief history of two major liquid Oxygen related incidents at AP. His such enhancement with the industry reflects where his heart was - always to help prevent major incidents and help prevent serious injuries. My heartfelt condolences to Eugene’s family and friends. A major loss - the world has lost a very creditable individual who was doing a world of good. Will miss you Eugene.

Peggy, Courtney and Janine,
Very sorry for your loss (every body's loss) of Eugene. I spent countless hours "under his wing" learning and then perfecting skills in the HAZMAT / Emergency Response sector.
I won't be forgetting the numerous trips we took around our great country sharing knowledge (and some great laughs to boot), with hundreds of fellow "HazMatters".
Happy trails, good buddy.......give my regards to Jimi Hendrix, Janis, Jerry Garcia and the rest of the folks when ya see 'em !

Dear Eugene,
I cannot believe that you have left this earth. I know that you are at peace with the angels and are no longer in any pain.
You are truly one of the kindest people I ever met. You never failed to ask about our children whenever we worked together at
CERT events and there were so many! We had many conversations over the years. You were always the first one to volunteer and truly cared for others. I will truly miss you.
Be sure to watch over your beautiful family whom you were so very proud of and you can be sure that friends will be looking out for them as well. You have left his world too soon. You had so much more work to do, but God decided he needed you more and he floated you up to the heavens in a beautiful hot air balloon on angels wings.. Rest in peace dear friend.
Sincerely,
Jane and Pat Lundy and family.
