Melvyn Morrison

Obituary of Melvyn J Morrison

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Melvyn Morrison, a cherished family member, beloved friend, and ardent enthusiast of the horse racing and casino world. Mel died peacefully at home on October 3, 2023, leaving behind a legacy filled with memories of excitement, laughter, and the thrill of the game.

Mel cherished his visits to the casino and racetrack. His eyes would sparkle with anticipation as he approached the craps tables, and his smile would light up the room when luck was on his side at the betting windows of Monmouth Park and The Meadowlands. Mel was known not just for his good luck, but for his generosity in sharing his good fortune.

Mel was born on July 18, 1942 in Paterson, NJ to Eugene and Rose Morrison. After graduating high school Mel enlisted in the U.S. Army, honorably serving his country from 1961-1964. In his return to civilian life, Mel found a career with the U.S. Postal Service, first serving as a letter carrier and then working as an accountant. During this time, Mel earned his degree from William Paterson College. He would remain with the USPS his entire career until retiring in 1998.

Mel is survived by his daughters, Christine Acocella and Dawn Iorio, their respective husbands, Paul and Luke, his cherished grandchildren Kaitlyn and Jake Iorio. Mel was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Kathleen, and his sisters, Eugenia “Jean” Bremer & Rose Szapor.

Though unconfirmed, there is a rumor Mel’s last words were, “Please put my casino reward cards in my casket, just in case they have craps tables in heaven.”
