Obituary of Kevin Regan

Kevin Robert Regan, 59, of Los Angeles, CA and Tewksbury, NJ, died of sudden heart failure on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at his residence in Los Angeles.

Kevin was born in Plainfield, NJ, on March 4, 1964, the son of Judith (Larmour) Regan and the late Thomas F. Regan. He was a 1983 graduate of The Peddie School (Hightstown, NJ) and received his B.A. from Reed College in Portland, Oregon, in 1987.

Kevin spent the majority of his professional career at Reuters Television in Los Angeles, where he served since 1994 as senior news producer and head of the bureau. He distinguished himself as a gifted, muscular writer and sharp diviner of the news hook. He was a generous collaborator and colleague, and an inspiring and inspired mentor to so many young people starting out in journalism. “A great boss and a sweet friend”; “A fantastic colleague and friend!!!”; “He taught me so much, not just about the industry but about what being a good manager and friend means”; “One of the kindest, calmest, funniest, and most competent folks you'd ever meet in the highly stressful and competitive TV news biz. we've lost an absolute prince.” These are just a sample of the many tributes from those whose professional and personal lives were enriched by knowing and working with Kevin.

Kevin was able to re-locate back to New Jersey at the beginning of the Covid pandemic, where he stayed with his mother and provided needed companionship and support. He was a prodigious reader and voracious consumer of news and information spanning current events, pop culture, literature and history. He did not suffer fools, charlatans or poseurs gladly. Well into the digital age, he continued to maintain a massive music CD collection spanning the many genres that he relished.  Kevin’s was the acerbic wit and tongue in the Regan family, which provided constant entertainment, amusement and, on occasion, fierce debate. That wit will be deeply and sorely missed, as will his committed companionship to his mother.

In addition to his mother, Judith, Kevin is survived by his brother, Brian (Michelle Reo) of Oldwick, NJ and his sister, Christine Greenebaum (Steve), of New Orleans, as well as his nephew Curran Regan and nieces Ciara Regan and Megan and Amanda Greenebaum, with whom he shared close relationships as an uncle whose wit, intellect, and cultural and world-views provided a vibrant source of both learning and enjoyment as they grew up and entered adulthood. Rounding them out are numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins here and in Ireland, England and beyond who loved him as deeply as his immediate family did.

One important note: Kevin would absolutely not want flowers of any kind. He detested the whole flower thing. The family requests that donations be made in Kevin’s name to The Society of Professional Journalists, whose non-profit work includes strengthening the pillars of a free press in places like Ukraine and in the Middle East.  You can donate in Kevin's name here: https://www.spj.org/donate.asp

The family will hold a memorial service celebrating Kevin’s life on Saturday, November 11, 2023 at 12:00 pm at the Kearns Funeral Home, 103 Old Highway 28, Whitehouse, NJ 088888.
