Obituary of Salvatore Schifano

Salvatore Schifano, age 83 of Tewksbury Twp., NJ, died Thursday, March 27, 2008 at his home. Born and raised in Newark, NJ, he was the son of the late Rosario and Grace Schifano. Sal had lived in Newark and Colonia before moving to Tewksbury Twp., 41 years ago. He was a Corporal in the United States Air Force during WWII. Sal married Frances Greco in 1950 and they shared 58 years of love and companionship. He learned his trade as a Tinsmith through vocational school and later joined and retired from Local 25 of the Sheet Metal Workers Union of Carlstadt, NJ. During that time, he had worked for over 20 years at the Hemminger Company. Sal kept himself busy around the house by doing carpentry projects that included an addition to the porch, building a gazebo and making picture frames for family photographs. He also kept his tinsmith skills sharp by making metal planters and other items. When he was not busy with a project, he could be found working out in the garden or relaxing by doing an oil painting. Sal was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and past president of the Tewksbury Seniors group. He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Merle who died in 2007. Besides his loving wife, Frances, he is survived by his two sons; Ronald and his fianc Diane Boncher of Maple Shade, NJ and Robert of Tewksbury Twp., his daughter, Kathie and her husband John Phoenix of Glen Gardner, NJ; three sisters, Mary Ricotta of Cedar Grove, Carmella Adams of Caldwell and Antoinette Schifano of Livingston. He is also survived by five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, March 30, 2008 from 2 5 PM at the Kearns Funeral Home, 103 Old Highway, Whitehouse. A funeral mass will be held on Monday at 9:30 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Whitehouse Station. Entombment will be at St. Bernard's Cemetery, Bridgewater. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Hunterdon Hospice, 2100 Wescott Drive, Flemington, NJ 08822.
