Obituary of Stephen Hneyda

Stephen Hneyda of Whitehouse Station, NJ died at his home after a courageous battle with bladder cancer on February 4, 2009. He was 87.Born in Brooklyn, NY, October 29, 1921, Stephen lived in Edison, NJ before retiring to the Whitehouse Station area in 1985.Stephen served in the National Guard for 3 years before entering the U.S. Army at the start of WWII. Overseas for 15 months in the 127th AAA Gun Battalion in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, he achieved the ranks of first Sgt. and Gun Commander and earned the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a special citation for his service as staff sergeant from 1944-45. He remained a devoted friend to his WWII buddies and faithfully attended their yearly reunions until last year.Stephenss profession for over 35 years was a truck driver, the majority of those years working for the AMSCO-American Mineral Spirits Co. of Carteret, NJ while residing in Edison.He was a lieutenant in the Edison Township Police Reserves for 20 years, volunteered in Edison Townships first Heavy Duty Rescue Squad, and involved himself in other civic organizations that he enjoyed.He was a faithful member for 35 years of the First Presbyterian Church in Metuchen, NJ. After his retirement and move to Whitehouse Station he became an elder in the Readington Reformed Church and remained a faithful member for 23 years until his death.He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary, his two daughters, Mary Ann DAndrade and Christine A. Mailler, his daughter from a previous marriage, Patricia Tereskiewycz, his stepson Walter Dicksen, his grandchildren, Cheryl Mailler, Clint Dicksen, Todd Dicksen, Ann DAndrade and his great grandchildren, Sara Ann Dicksen and Marinne Eliza McNally.Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, February 7, 2009 from 10:00 to 11:45 AM at the Kearns Funeral Home, 103 Old Highway Whitehouse, NJ 08888.
