Obituary of Edna Space Westcott

Edna Westcott, age 101 of Whitehouse, NJ, died Sunday, April 25, 2010 at the Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, NJ. Born in Centerville, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Stella Hoffman. Edna lived most of her life in Whitehouse. She graduated from Flemington High School in 1927 and Trenton Normal School in 1929. As a grammar school teacher, she taught at Stanton Woods School, the Oldwick School, Whitehouse Consolidated School and Green Knoll School. She taught for 29 years. Edna was a charter member of the Old Whitehouse Chapter of the DAR, having joined in 1929. She was a member of the Whitehouse United Methodist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, and Cameo. She and members of the Whitehouse Wishbone Improvement Society were responsible for having sidewalks placed throughout Whitehouse. Edna enjoyed writing and submitted to the Hunterdon County Committee on Aging, an article for a booklet called:" I Remember", which recalls the experiences of several local people who lived during the Depression. Edna was predeceased by her first husband, George Space, her second husband, Matthew Westcott, her daughter, Nancy Space and sister, Mabel Miller. She is survived by her 3 daughters, Muriel Cesta of Monroe, VA, Virginia M. Sheay of Stockton, NJ and Georgie Ann Guthe of Delanco, NJ. She is also survived by her step daughter, Louise Yard of Flemington, her brother, Raymond Hoffman of Newark, DE and 9 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. at the Whitehouse United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Whitehouse United Methodist Church Cemetery.
