Obituary of Sophie I. Rak

Sophie I. Rak, age 93, formerly of Harrison, NJ, died Friday, January 21, 2011 at the Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, NJ. Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Koval. Sophie had lived in Harrison for 50 years before moving to Whitehouse Station 8 years ago. She was employed by Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Prudential Insurance in Newark, NJ. She was a communicant and member of the Alter Rosary Society and the Cancer Guild of Holy Cross Church in Harrison. She also belonged to the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association of Ohio and the Readington Township Senior Citizens Group. Sophie was predeceased by her husband, Robert Rak Sr. in 1989 and her son, Robert Rak Jr., in 1968, four sisters, Anna, Mary, Margaret and Helen and two brothers, John and Andrew. She is survived by her daughter, Arlene Griffing and her husband, Bill of Whitehouse Station, NJ. Sophie is also survived by her three grandsons, William and his wife, Alison of Flemington, NJ, Robert and his wife, Bridget of New Hope, PA, and Dan and his wife, Carolyn of Doylestown, PA and 5 great grandchildren, Ashley, Brandon, Caitlin, Billy and Avery. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, January 23, 2011 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the Kearns Funeral Home, 103 Old Highway 28, Whitehouse, NJ. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated Monday, January 24, 2011 at 10:00 AM at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 323 Harrison Ave., Harrison, NJ Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
