Obituary of John D. Smythe

John D. Smythe, age 86, of Convent Station, NJ, died Monday, March 19, 2012 at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, NJ. Born in Morristown, New Jersey he was the son of the late Victor D. and Annunciata Kearns Smythe. Having lived many years in Convent Station, Mr. Smythe came there from Springfield, New Jersey. He was raised in Summit, New Jersey and had also resided at Clairvaux Manor in Lyons, New Jersey. He was a graduate of Summit High School. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, John enlisted in the US Army Air Corps which became the US Air Force. At the conclusion of WWII, Flight Engineer Smythe received an honorable discharge. Upon his return to civilian life, John became involved in the automobile industry and was an automobile dealer until his death. John was a part owner of Smythe Volvo of Summit, New Jersey. Also following his discharge from the Armed Forces, John received his civilian pilot license which he maintained until his death. John is survived by his brothers, William J. of Warren Twp. and David L. of Murray Hill, NJ and Stuart, FL. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and a great-great nephew. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 10:45 a.m. at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 306 Morris Avenue, Summit, NJ. Friends may visit on Thursday, March 22, 2012 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Kearns Funeral Home, 103 Old Highway 28, Whitehouse, NJ. Entombment will be in St. Teresa's Cemetery, Summit, NJ In lieu of flowers, family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
