Obituary of Robert W Karwel
Robert W. Karwel, age 84 of Lake Hopatcong, NJ, died Saturday, June 2, 2018 St. Clare’s Compassionate Care Hospice in Dover, NJ.
Born in Jersey City, he was the son of the late Walter and Eugenia Karwel. A resident of Readington Twp. for most of his life, Robert had moved to Lake Hopatcong 15 years ago.
He was a proud veteran of the United States Army where he served on active duty in Korea from 1955 to 1957. In 1955 and 1956 he was on the US rifle team where he won many awards.
Robert was the owner of Karwel Associates, an insurance and pension company that represented many different types of businesses.
In 1951 Robert graduated from Dickinson High School in Jersey City and in 1955 from Seton Hall University. He was a 15 year continuous member of the American Legion Post 245 in Lake Hopatcong and was a lifetime member and Ex Chief of the Whitehouse Fire Company in Whitehouse Station. He had a true appreciation of nature and belonged to Ducks Unlimited, a nonprofit organization dedicated to wildlife conservation. He also belonged to and supported Ruffed Grouse Society, Knee Deep Club and the NRA. He loved hunting, fishing and spending time in the outdoors. A community activist, he was notably one of the leaders that made coin tosses legalized in NJ. Robert enjoyed the thrill of buying and selling and loved going to flea markets and estate auctions. Robert had a great sense of humor. He was always telling jokes and would never leave without telling one. He will be lovingly remembered and tremendously missed by all his family and friends.
He is survived by his four daughters, Lori Donnelly of GA, Jeanine Mohammed and her husband, Azeem of PA, Stephanie Hults and her husband, Harry of Holland Twp, NJ, and Leslie Karwel of FL. He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren, Jessica, Pamela, Patricia, Kristina, Nicholas, Courtney and Kevin and 6 great grandchildren, Lana, Vivien, Derek, Kyle, James and Hailey.
A service will be held on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at 7:00 PM at the Kearns Funeral Home, 103 Old Highway 28, Whitehouse, NJ 08888. Friends may visit with the family prior to the service from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.
Burial with Military Honors will be Thursday at 11:00 AM in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
