Obituary of Carlton C. Durling

Carlton C. Durling of Whitehouse, N.J. and Vero Beach, FL. passed away at home on November 14 at the age of 89.

A graduate of Blair Academy and Penn State University, he joined his father as Vice President of Durling Farms, a family operated milk processing and distributing company that was founded by his grandfather, A. C. Durling, in 1888.

Carlton founded the QuickChek convenience store company in 1967 that now operates a chain of stores serving northern New Jersey and lower New York State. An avid sportsman and a member of Club Limited, he spent endless days hunting and fishing in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Scotland, Africa, and Russia. For many years, he and his wife, Betty, hunted with the Essex Fox Hounds in Far Hills N. J. They also enjoyed skiing from their home in Deer Valley, Utah and other venues.

He was a member of New York Holland Society. The Durling family’s forefather, Jan Gerretse Dorlandt, arrived in the United States in 1652, settling on a small farm in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn N. Y. Carlton was a member of the Baltusrol Golf Club, Springfield, N. J., as well as the Red Stick and Windsor clubs in Vero Beach, Fl.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, the former Betty Jane Correll; his two sons, C. Correll Durling and his wife Lili, and Dean C. Durling and his wife Liz, his daughter, Denise Holmberg and her husband Peter, 10 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Lamington Presbyterian Church, Lamington, NJ on Tuesday November 20 at 2 pm.
