Obituary of Frank J Scherer

Frank J Scherer, age 85 of Whitehouse Station, NJ, died Monday, December 17, 2018 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset in Somerville, NJ.

Born in Elizabeth, NJ, he was the son of the late Clement and Hedwig Scherer. 

Frank had been a resident of Mountainside before moving to Whitehouse Station 16 years ago.

He graduated from St. Benedict’s Prep in 1951 and went on to serve in the Navy on the USS Holder for four years as a Quartermaster 2nd Class.  Upon returning home he worked for a time for Public Service and then began working with his father at C. Scherer & Sons Painting and Decorating Contractors which he ran until his retirement in 2002.

Frank was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Whitehouse Station, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4504, was a past member of the Union Lions Club, President from 1974-1976 of “Painting and Decorating Contractors of America” (P.D.C.A.), President from 1977-1978 of “Associated Professional Painting and Decorating Contractors of New Jersey” and a past member of Suburban Golf Club and Fox Hollow Golf Club. Frank and his wife shared a passion for golf.  He enjoyed travel both across the country and in Europe and he was fortunate to take family vacations on Martha’s Vineyard each summer.  He was an avid fan of college basketball and took great delight in attending all of his grandchildren’s activities and sports.  He loved spending time in caring for his property but more than anything he relished the time he was able to spend with family and friends.  He was considered “everyone’s dad” and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Frank was predeceased by his sister, Helen Feola.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Barbara, his two daughters, Denise Sweeney and her husband, Terence of Chatham and Debora O’Keefe and her husband, John of Whitehouse Station, his sister, Anna Ganly of Basking Ridge and his six cherished grandchildren, Caitlin, Colleen, Patrick and Meghan Sweeney and Ryan and Bradford O’Keefe.

A funeral liturgy will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 9:30 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Whitehouse Station.

Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Kearns Funeral Home 103 Old Highway 28, Whitehouse, NJ 08888
