Nugent One of the Good Guys William Patrick Nugent was born in Newark, NJ on December 22nd, 1937 to Edward and Cecilia Nugent. He grew up in the North Ward and attended parochial schools. He went on to night school at Seton Hall University while working in a butcher's shop to pay his way. He became an Investigator at the FBI in Newark and met the love of his life, Noreen Beirne. They married, moved to Maplewood and within seven years had five children. During this time, he joined the Labor Department as a Special Agent and started a successful and fulfilling career that spanned three decades. He rose to Assistant Special Agent in charge of the Newark Office and was a member of the Organized Crime Strikeforce. His colleagues respected and admired his excellent investigative skills and his exceptional recall of past cases. His love for his job prompted his three sons to become a Detective, Police Officer, and Firefighter. In his career, he was one of the good guys fighting corruption and greed but to his family, he was the best – the kindest, most selfless, decent and honorable husband and father. People of great faith, our parents raised us to be strong, loyal, loving and decent people and they succeeded immensely. He was a strong enough man to love his equally strong wife and he raised sons to respect women and daughters to be their own person. He loved to travel and experience the beauty of nature. He often recalled seeing the sunrise over the Grand Canyon and gaining insight into the creation of the world. He loved reading, history, always remained a loyal Giants and Mets fan and celebrating his Irish heritage. He was there for every important moment in his children's lives and he brought extraordinary wisdom, calm and patience to help us solve any of our problems. He considered himself especially blessed to have twelve wonderful grandchildren. During the last two years of his life, he has needed more care as he recovered from a broken back and was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. The Nurses and Health Care Aides would tell us how much they loved our dad. Throughout all his medical setbacks, he remained brave, positive and grateful to all his caregivers. One Aide stopped me to tell me from his heart, "Your father is a really great and kind man." So even when he was at his worst, he treated all people with validation and kindness and remained one of the good guys to the end. Predeceased by his wife, Noreen Beirne Nugent, he is survived by his children, Michael and wife Robin, Edward, Kelly Nugent Colasanti and the late Christopher Colasanti, James and his wife Jennifer and Kerry Nugent Morrison and her husband Robert Morrison. His grandchildren, Matthew, Elizabeth, Clare, Cara, Lauren, Emily, Owen, Brady, Bridget, Tess, Liam, and Alice. He regularly attended Mass at Saint Edwards Parish in Milford, NJ and there will be a funeral liturgy to celebrate his life held there on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, we ask you to consider a donation in his honor to the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund at C/O Scholarship America, One Scholarship Way, St. Peter, MN 56082 or at info@familiesoffreedom.org For more information or to send condolences please visit www.kearnsfuneralhome.com William Patrick Nugent, age 81 died on May 2, 2019 at the Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, NJ.
