Phillips Exeter Academy years:
After St. Thomas, Dad thought that I should go to High School at Westtown School, where he went to school, and Mom suggested that I look at Northfield/Mount Herman. I ended up choosing Exeter, not only because my Uncle, Dick Hanson went there, but 2 boys from St. Thomas were already there. My mother asked a great question of one of the admissions officers: “What do the boys do for fun?” Exeter turned out to be a lot of work and not always a lot of fun. My grades were not stellar, and I wanted to spend time getting to know people more than I wanted to study. Mom told me: “You don’t have to do everything perfectly. Aim to get a “D” instead of an “A”.
She had a more elegant way of saying it, and although I laughed at the thought of going after such a low grade, I think this was in the back of my mind sometimes when I decided to do something fun rather than work on homework. I totally blew off homework on several occasions so that I could enjoy cultural events that were happening on the Exeter campus. We had a time-consuming project in Astronomy, and though I loved this class, I never did this assignment, and ended up getting a D minus in the course. Exeter was onerous enough that I left in the middle of my sophomore year and attended our local high school in Kent. Although I did return to Exeter for my Junior and Senior years, I met some new people during that half year at home, and as a result, I had a lot more friends during the summer. It was also good to re-connect with my parents and brothers during the actual school year.
My brothers got to attend more challenging schools too: Phil went to Old Trail for a year, and both of them went to High School at Westtown school outside of Philadelphia. It is definitely a challenge to let go, and give your children the freedom to learn on their own. Thank you, Mom!

St. Thomas Choir School:
Due perhaps to Mom’s uneven education, when she felt that her boys weren’t being challenged enough in school, she looked into sending us to a more challenging school. I was unaware of this in 1966 at the age of 11, when my cousin Cathy told me smugly: “you are going to be going to school in New York City this Fall”. We were vacationing in Vermont, but incredibly enough, the very next week, my cousin Chris and I auditioned to get into The Choir School of St. Thomas Church in New York City, and were both accepted. Chris entered as a 5th grader, and I entered as a 6th grader. Mom’s younger brother, Dick, taught English at St. Thomas, so this gave her confidence that I would be in good hands. I remember walking block after block in New York City, and to getting fitted for the school uniform. Mom had to sew name tags into all of my stuff! In later years she gifted me with a sewing kit!
I had many great experiences at St. Thomas, and since I missed my parents, I wrote to them fairly often. Since mothers are pretty important family members, at St. Thomas there were a number of mother-son events, and my own mother was too far away to attend, since we lived in Kent, Ohio. I was fortunate to have my mother’s younger sister, Liz, fill in at these events. I remember how proud I was to be standing next to such a good singer whenever we sang a hymn at dinner. When the students at St. Thomas visited a public library, who was there but my Aunt Liz! The other person who filled in for Mom at these mother-son events was my Grandmother, Margery Hanson. Since she was the head of a school in New Jersey (the Dwight School for girls), when she came to a dinner at St. Thomas, we got to sit right next to the Headmaster. Many thanks also to my uncle, Dick, who was a great substitute parent during my 3 years at St. Thomas!

Nancy and her Grand-daughter Sara:
Over the years, I have been pleased to see our daughter, Sara, taking our grandchildren, Kiran and Avi to their local library, since I remember fondly the many trips to the library that we had with Mom, both in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and of course in Kent, Ohio. I was proud of Sara when we went to hear her Evergreen Trio perform at the local library in Stirling, NJ, and it was clear that the librarian knew Sara very well. The concert was well-attended, and went very well.
When Sara was in high school, she wanted to go to Interlochen Arts Academy for their summer program, and her Grandmother, Nancy told us that she wanted to help pay for this summer program for Sara. This financial help was very much appreciated. Thanks Mom!
In a later summer, Sara went to a string camp in Vermont, and Nancy and Ross came to each of her concerts and took her out for dinner afterwards.
Julie and I made it to her final concert at this camp. As a teenager, Sara wrote an admiring tribute to her Grandmother. I will share some of this tribute in a later post.

Mom and our music lessons. Perhaps Mom was sorry that she had no daughters, who she might be able to influence with her love of books, music, art, and interior decorating, but she made do with the 3 children that she had. She saw to it that each of us took music lessons.
I remember Friday afternoons in Woods Hole Massachusetts, when she would drive Philip and me to our recorder lessons. I would wait outside while Philip had his lesson (he was in first grade then), and then I would have my lesson which included another 3rd grade boy. To this day, we both play the recorder.
I am not sure what sort of instrumental music lessons our brother Jay took, but he has become an excellent guitar player and composer of songs. He also took voice lessons with Mrs. Palmieri, and he would often sing one of the songs he was learning with Mom playing the piano.
When we moved back to Kent, Ohio, she got me piano lessons with Mrs. Nurmi, who lived a few blocks away. I never had to be pushed to practice piano, perhaps because I had such a good example of a piano player in my mother, and Mrs. Nurmi commended me and one other student at her end of year recital. Mom told me years later, that the next year, Mrs. Nurmi decided to get rid of all of her piano students except for me.
